WGS 412—I thought this was important to share.  I am tired of sitting in other classes where people speculate about other’s lives and making generalizations.  I think we have a great advantage being in the class we are and sharing our and other’s (like the following) experiences and views that tell a different story than the under representing media and education system we suffer through. Many persons of non-color having no clue as to what is being left out because their experiences are not missing from the text books and news reports.  Because they are not the missing faces in civic offices, not under represented across the board in academia, congress,  or corporations, until you get to the prison populations, then there are disproportions to the extreme. We can all do better to know what racism means today, to understand it hasn’t gone anywhere, it still exists and is having an impact on people’s lives.

Interesting how whites view whites.  Minority groups are judged on color of skin, ethnicity, language, etc. and lumped into the grouping of the “other” but whites are taken on an individual basis.  Same idea, white kid shoots up a school…it’s because of video games, music, depression, bullying, meds. etc. but a black kid brings a gun to school, well you know…it’s cuz all black kids are thugs packin.   Or so the stereotype would suggest.

So, this guy is too occupied with hating whites on an individual basis to acknowledge he is racist by the plain fact of his privileged ideals of whites as individuals and POC as groups that experience racism.

There is some comfort knowing the human race can move quickly from one place to another via flight, but if one doesn’t have the agency, the means to pay for this luxury it is less of a comfort and more of a heartache.  Sometimes it would be nice to walk out of our lives and just arrive somewhere else.  For some, a dream really.

“There’s a plane leaving for anywhere you want right now, and in an hour, and in a day, and in a year. You can get out whenever you want, it’s comforting I think.”

Tuesday is nearly over—

This is not necessarily a bad thing, that Tuesday has come nearly to its end.  There were other Tuesdays and there will be more—or so we anticipate.  I often feel the same way, that I have lived many days before now, I’ve lived through today and I am anticipating living tomorrow. The fact that I am aware is not unusual for me.

We all, of course, realize we are living beings, but usually this realization comes through death or sickness, sometimes we go through days upon days, months and years before stopping to recognize the awesomeness that is in living.  The living in this universe, on this particular planet, in this era, in this climate, etc. I also think about how many have lived before us and many can be anticipated long after us.

I realize my cat, how beautiful she is and how she is living, with me, and how amazing it is that we are living together in this time and space.  By now, someone is questioning what kind of drugs I’m taking.  I’m not.  I’m just like this.  This, I have found, is not uncommon with Idealists.  I don’t know how often people contemplate their humanness and the living world around them. The position and existence of trees, grass, and wonder how much has been lost that we will never see, and wonder what is now that will not one day exist years from now, or even days from now.  I think of these things several times a week or day sometimes.

Today was an especially busy day, and I questioned the things I do in my life, how significant are they?  I only have one life to live on this earth and I question sometimes my actions and choices.  But they most often are the choices that suit my mind and heart.  The life I have lived suites my temperament.

I sometimes wake from a deep sleep and know that I AM.  I wake up, I feel, in another state of mind, one that is beyond the daily consciousness.  It is surreal and euphoric. In my daily consciousness I can be cynical and live as a suppressed romantic.  I want to believe in human goodness, but realism and the confined ideas of realists pressure my hopes into a space that doesn’t give up, yet does not allow for valiant selfless anarchist actions.  I seek knowledge in hopes of contributing to conquering injustice through whichever ways I am best able. Sometimes that is just getting myself to work on time and getting my kids to school. Sometimes I am late to work, but complete homework, or the other way around.

Living the constrained ritualized life waiting for that chance to fly, to go beyond the real and live in a society that is surreal.

Ok—I have to go to work now—before Wednesday gets here.  I will be back to my dreamy bed, (I do admire sleep) after midnight.

This is a new video I hadn’t seen before today.  I LOVE THIS GUY!!!  He is so HAPPY!!  O.K.—this is my prozac!  I have watched several of his videos repeatedly. He can MOVE, and that smile is amazing.  This is the kind of positive energy that I look for after reading serious, depressing social justice issues.  I believe it is the balancing of finding the greatness in this world when I seek out the challenging wrongs with out society.  I love this guy for putting it out there, and doing it well.  He is inspirational and his fun is infectious! What a gift!!

iPod Racing (by jurvetson)

I think about these issues all the time…I love good food, but 1) It is harder do find when eating out 2) the food that is tasty and “good” is not good for us…it’s killing us 3) It’s hard to break traditions and customs, especially when they taste good and they can amount to comfort and community.  I had a HARD time not eating family cooking AND I pay for it too…I’m still trying to rid myself of 10 lbs put on this past summer with home cooking that I didn’t cook.  It WAS tasty…to a point.  I missed simple veggies and non-fried foods after awhile. It also get’s tough to eat healthily and conveniently non-expensively.  Every day choices!!

I was in Phoenix, AZ at a Soul Food spot and immediately when me and my brother walked in I was flung into seduction by the smell of great food in the air. Its like in cartoons when the smoke from the food comes up to you and hooks you by the nostrils and then floats/drags you over to a plate of piping deliciousness.

However, that seductive smell is created with pounds of salt, sugar, and bacon fat! As a brotha who, well, wants to live- my diet is pretty conservative and excludes beef, turkey, chicken, pork, and liquor. I love to eat though and still find plenty of delicious foods and dishes to eat.

I sat down in this restaurant and as a health conscience patron the pickings were pretty slim for me. What (who) wasn’t slim was anybody else dining at the spot! Seriously, NOBODY eating there was under 200lbs. I took this picture of this grandma, mother, and daughter and thought, “Man, that is 3 generations of Put Down the Biscuit…”

I’m not being mean. It just disturbs me that the food that we associate with our culture and heritage is often deathly. I heard a big brother behind me ordering: ” I’ll take the hamhock dinner and an Xlrg Coke”
